‘To thine own self be true’. I’m sure you’ve heard this but what does it actually mean? Generally speaking it relates to being honest with yourself and knowing yourself. Sound easy?
For most of us it’s not. A good place to start is really considering what makes you happy and what your aspirations are? These are different for us all and that’s ok.
Prioritising your wants and needs is ever changing and is dependent and shaped by what life stage you’re at; adolescents, young adult, adult, middle aged etc.
Understanding yourself and paying attention to your desires is a good foundation to begin the journey. Sometimes though we all question ourselves and need internal prompts to keep us on track.
I AM CONFIDENT
You might not always feel it and this is the perfect time to reinforce all your achievements and recognise previous experiences where you have been successful.Consciously condition yourself into believing it and you’re half way there. Everybody can improve confidence, but you have to believe it.
I AM ABLE
Be realistic with yourself and don’t set yourself up to fail, this self belief is a must in your mind toolkit. As a starting point base this internal statement on fact.
I’m focussedYou want this, you’re able to do it, don’t be distracted or allow yourself to be sidetracked. Remember what the goal its.
IT MAKES ME FEEL STRONG
Feel the feeling of success. Do you like it? You know what you have to do to experience it again. Embrace all your hard work but don’t stop there. You have to maintain the attitude to retain the feelings.
I CAN DO THIS
If you need to base this on fact then think back to times when you did achieve your goals. They don’t need to be significant achievements but you need to have a store of them to combat the natural negative thoughts that come to us all in times of uncertain.
I AM FOCUSED
You want this, you’re able to do it, don’t be distracted or allow yourself to be sidetracked. Remember what the goal its. I’ve done this before, so I can do it again. Acknowledge and recognise past successes. Don’t stop there though, challenge yourself to develop further and [be more focused](https://www
Remember baby steps is all it takes. It’s the consistency of the commitment to get better and better that will determine the long term gains for you.
I HAVE DONE THIS BEFORE SO I CAN DO IT AGAIN
Acknowledge and recognise past successes. Don’t stop there though, challenge yourself to develop further. Remember baby steps is all it takes.
It’s the consistency of the commitment to get better and better that will determine the long term gains for you.
I WILL DO THIS
Invoke a self-fulfilling positive prophecy, it’s a wonderful tool to employ.Tell yourself over and over that you are going to achieve your aspiration.
You will be consciously engaging an internal process that will act an internal influencer and motivator. The first step is to convince yourself you can do it. Simple as that? Not quite you have to trust all the above thoughts in order to support the process. This is a lifelong challenge. Ultimately you know what you’re capable of, believe in yourself and your half way there. It is a change process every day of our lives, but learn to enjoy change as well.
